Sod Care & Tips

Sod Installation is one of the most gratifying exercises any home owner can embark upon.  Here are some expert tips to ensure that your investment lasts!

Sod Care

Water is one of the most important factors in ensuring that your sod enjoys a long and thriving existence.  After your sod is installed, it should be kept thoroughly moist for about two weeks.  It is best to water your sod in the morning and / or evening (one hour in the morning and one hour in the evening is best), and to avoid watering during the hottest parts of the day.   Not all sprinklers are created equally, so it is a good idea to check the sod, take note of any dry areas that the sprinkler may have missed and hand water those dry areas.

After the first two weeks, you can reduce the number of times you water your sod to once every couple of days, weather dependent - if it is very hot, continuing to water it twice a day is a good practice, however if it is overcast or rainy, you can reduce the frequency of watering.  After a few weeks of growth, you can begin to water your grass for one - two hours every five days.  This can be gradually reduced to watering once per week, depending on the weather.

It is important to not walk on your new sod for at least two weeks, especially on the wet areas.  This will ensure that the sod will take root most effectively, and that your new beautiful investment will enjoy the longest, healthiest lifespan.

Tips on Water Conservation

Sol Landscaping is focused on water conservation, and helping the environment.  Here are some handy tips, courtesy of the City of Calgary (http://www.calgary.ca/UEP/Water/Pages/Water-conservation/Lawn-and-garden/Lawn-Care.aspx), to ensure that you water most effectively, and save money!

Be weather wise
Including rainfall, your lawn needs only 1 inch (2.5 cm) of water over the week to stay healthy. Check out the Calgary lawn and garden forecast at The Weather Network or Environment Canada.

Use your sprinkler only if you have to
Lay a Frisbee upside down within range of your sprinkler and time how long it takes to fill up. That's how long you should run the sprinkler over the week, if there is no rain. Your soil can only absorb so much water, so it's best to divide the sprinkler time up into several smaller time periods throughout the week.

Water in the morning
Use a sprinkler timer set for first thing in the morning. The water won't evaporate in the heat of the day and you won't forget to turn off the sprinkler.

Properly aim your sprinkler
To avoid watering your driveway and sidewalk, be sure that your sprinkler is aimed onto your lawn and garden areas.
